First of all, check with the landlord to see if you can do that.
The initial outlay can be a bit much, rollers, brushes, paint trays, painter's tape, ladders, etc. Since you don't own the house, cheaper quality of paint will do. Satin or flat is good for the walls, semi-gloss for bathrooms and kitchens, high gloss for trim if painted.
It is not hard to paint. I am just too old to be crawling around on the floor cutting in on the walls near the floor. You cut in around doors, windows, floor, ceiling, etc so then you can just roll on the paint on the rest of the wall. I always use a corner edger too to cover the corners of the rooms (rollers don't get close enough).
I am going to love my fussy painting by the front door, opportunities to sit and paint. Not so much when I have to be standing on the step stool.
