There is nothing I hate more than bigotry, in all forms but these people deserve a special place in hell.

There is a group who hate in the name of God. BTW, I am pretty sure their God is male, white, straight, and of a certain class structure. These people are known as the "outreach committee" from Westboro Baptist church of Topkea, Kansas. They make it their business to travel to different events and protest that the ills of today's society are because their God hates fags and the evils of homosexuality (why do I think their pastor is a repressed gay boy?). Their signs thank God for 9/11 because that was in retaliation for this country's wanton ways. Not to mention Katrina and Rita. Their latest? That American's are being killed in Iraq because God is punishing America for its stance on gays.

They have made statements that they are coming to town to protest at a fallen soldier's funeral. I do believe they showed up at Michael Shepard's funeral too. The call has been put out for people to come in support of the late Sgt. Morrison and his family. I can do that. I can get up in these people's faces and tell them exactly what I think of them. I can glare at them at 10 paces as well as at 100 paces.

Don't confuse this protest with something akin that I am in support of the war, I am in support of people having the right to bury their dead without an asshole outside shouting hateful things.

Mark, I am on my way to Yakima in the morning. Maybe I will hit the fair too (might as well kill two birds with one stone).

Do people really think like him?

Unfortunatly too many people think like him. How do these people live with so much hate?

As a person who just lost a friend who died fighting for his country in just the last week. I would be totally beyond pissed that people would not let his family bury him in peace. Protest anywhere else, but let the mourners mourn.

If Phelps and the members of his inbred family "church" show up, they generally leave after waving their placards around for about five minutes. That's if they have the balls to get out of their bus -- most of the time they drive right by without stopping. In some towns, the cops will even let you get in a couple of punches at them before pushing you out of the way.

I don't understand how they can be religious and spew all this hatred. Maybe I missed that part when my priest talked about hating people and that God is punishing us. I remember Jerry Fawell and Pat Robinson stating similar hate right after 9/11 - American was being punished for Roe-v-Wade decision, homosexuality and general disregard for what they had to say. They retracted those statements right quick. I guess you are right, a few do think like him. I think the majority of Americans don't think like these people, I do hope that is correct.

Exactly, this is not the place to protest anything. How dis-respectful can you be?

I would love to get a couple of punches in. I wouldn't mind if they didn't show up or just did the drive-by. This is so not the time or the place to be spewing their warped sense of Christianity. Anywhere else but at a funeral.

At least they will be out numbered.

Ah yes, the wonderful Fred Phelps. If God is anything like I think (and hope) he/she is, Mr. Phelps and his followers will rot in hell. They are terrible people. I think I have heard that most of his followers are his family. Guess daddy's brainwashed them into following his evil ways.

I understand what you are supporting, Chele. I don't support the war at all, but I do support the men and women who are fighting, and especially their right to a respectful funeral if they die in service to the country!

People protesting funerals do go to hell.
Especially soldiers' funerals.
